As the world collectively battles the global outbreak of novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, medical organizations and governments are turning to new technologies that deliver health care solutions with speed and scale while protecting medical employees from dangerous exposure. UBTECH is at the forefront of these new technologies, deploying pandemic-fighting robots that have already made a positive, life-saving impact in China. Beginning at Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital and coming soon to other locations around the world, UBTECH’s AIMBOT and Cruzr robots are using AI smarts to build a first line of defense against COVID-19. Workers install robots at fever clinic in Shenzhen Third Hospital AI at the forefront Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital is a national communicable disease medical research center and the only designated hospital for COVID-19 patients in Shenzhen. Coincidentally, it is also located close to UBTECH’s world headquarters and R&D facilities, permitting UBTECH engineers, medical providers, and government officials to work closely together on robotics and AI solutions that could be up and running in the hospital within just a few short weeks. Robotics and AI were identified early on as vital technologies needed to slow the spread of COVID-19. UBTECH swiftly formed an emergency response team that surveyed hospital workers about their technology needs, finding urgent requirements that included human temperature monitoring, interactive triage and consultation, public information broadcast, and environment disinfection. Engineers then went immediately to work building solutions for these needs based on UBTECH’s AIMBOT, the autonomous indoor monitoring robot, and Cruzr, the cloud-based intelligent service robot. AIMBOT disinfecting a fever clinic in Shenzhen Third Hospital AIMBOT: first line of defense in the fever clinic The fever clinic at Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital is one of the most critical – and potentially dangerous – locations in the city’s battle against COVID-19. AIMBOT serves as a first line of defense here, providing body temperature monitoring, mask recognition, crowd density monitoring, information broadcasting, and environmental disinfection. When a person enters the fever clinic, AIMBOT utilizes infrared and visible spectrum binocular cameras to identify the temperature of the visitor and whether a mask is worn. If several people arrive at the same time, it can also instantly recognize up to 15 people. AIMBOT’s AI can further assess the density of people in a given area, allowing the robot to vocalize a reminder for people to keep a safe distance from each other to reduce the risk of infection. If any abnormality is detected, AIMBOT is able to immediately notify hospital staff that may be in a different clinic of the hospital for their security. Throughout the day, AIMBOT’s public broadcast system is able to announce reminders of important health recommendations and guidelines and updates from the hospital. AIMBOT can also be equipped with disinfectant to automatically perform disinfection rounds at regular intervals. Cruzr at the Outpatients of Shenzhen Third Hospital Cruzr: safeguarding medical staff As a cloud-based intelligent service robot, Cruzr is ideally suited as a first point of contact for the hospital’s quarantine and outpatient areas. Cruzr’s humanoid form invites visitors to approach it for virus information, initial symptom diagnosis, and even live consultation with a medical professional through the remote video function. In this way, Cruzr helps front-line personnel to improve the quality and efficiency of virus prevention and control while mitigating cross-infections risks. Like AIMBOT, Cruzr is also able to detect if a visitor is not wearing a mask and can vocalize a reminder, as well as broadcast health recommendations, guidelines, and updates. By serving these front-line functions and allowing human staff to focus on more urgent needs, Cruzr is able to reduce the overwhelming risk faced by staff as they work to assess and triage visitors entering the hospital day and night. Unprecedented times, groundbreaking solutions With populations around the world bracing for the full, unprecedented impact of COVID-19, robots and AI are well positioned to break new ground in saving lives and easing the strain on health care providers. Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital shows the promise of these solutions, and more deployments will follow soon as the battle against the virus continues.
